Frequently Asked Questions - Children

How old should a child be when he first sees a dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends that a child be seen by a dentist as soon as his or her first tooth erupts, but no later than the first birthday.

What does the doctor do at a child’s first visit?
This is a “well baby checkup” for the baby teeth. The doctor will check for tooth decay and other problems and can demonstrate how to clean the child’s teeth properly.

What is the purpose of a fluoride treatment?
Studies show that fluoride reduces cavities in both children and adults. It makes the tooth surface stronger and more resistant to plaque bacteria, as well as helps to repair the early stages of tooth decay. The fluoride treatments applied in the dental office are more concentrated than self-applied fluorides (toothpaste & mouthwash) and provide a longer-term benefit.

Are fluoride tablets necessary if I have well water?
Yes. To achieve the maximum benefit of fluoride there must be a mix of applied and systemic (ingested) fluoride. The fluoride tablets are a substitute for fluoride which is normally added to community water supplies.

At what age do I discontinue fluoride treatments for my child?
Generally, at the age of 16.

What are the benefits of sealants, and how long do they last?
A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth – premolars and molars. The plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the enamel from plaque and acids.
Sealants usually last for several years.

Why should we restore primary (baby) teeth?
Children need strong healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and have a good-looking smile. Primary teeth keep a space in the jaw for the permanent teeth. If a primary tooth is lost too early the teeth beside it may drift into the empty space. When it is time for the permanent teeth to come in there may not be enough room, causing the teeth to be crooked or crowded. Only your child’s front teeth (incisors) are lost at age 6 -7. The remainder of baby teeth typically don’t exfoliate (fall out) until between 10 – 12 years of age.
