Frequently Asked Questions Home Care (After an extraction)
What is a dry socket?
A dry socket is a condition that sometimes occurs after a tooth is extracted. If the socket is slow to heal, this condition can develop and can be very painful for three to five days.
Why can?t I smoke or drink through a straw?
Continuing to smoke during the first few days after the extraction can slow the healing process and the soft tissue will not be able to fill in the socket to form the blood clot needed for healthy healing. It can contribute to a painful condition called a dry socket. Sucking through a straw may dislodge the blood clot needed for healing. You should also avoid drinking any alcohol for 48 hours after the procedure.
How long will I be numb?
When a local anesthetic is used you will most likely be numb for several hours after the procedure.
Do I need to wait before I eat?
For the first 24-48 hours you should eat soft foods and avoid anything that crumbles, is sticky or is spicy. Chew on the opposite side of the mouth for the first 24 hours.
Will I need pain medication?
Some discomfort is normal after an extraction. Your doctor may prescribe pain medication, but Tylenol or Motrin may be sufficient. If antibiotics are prescribed you should follow the instructions and finish all of the medications. Avoid taking aspirin ? it can inhibit the formation of a blood clot.
Will I be able to drive, or do I need to bring a driver?
You may want to bring someone with you to drive, especially if you are having multiple extractions done. If your extraction was performed under conscious sedation you must have someone with you to drive you home.
