My gums bleed when I brush & floss. What does this mean?
This is a warning sign of periodontal disease and you should see your dentist.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that can destroy bone and other tissues that support the teeth.
Can periodontal disease be cured?
Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that affects only
the gums. It can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing and regular
dental cleanings. If not eliminated, gingivitis can lead to the more destructive form of periodontal disease, called periodontitis. Periodontitus can only be controlled, not cured. Proper treatment, more frequent dental visits, diligent home care and in advanced cases, periodontal surgery, are necessary to control this disease.
Is periodontal disease linked to any other diseases?
Recent research suggests there may be a link between gum disease and other health problems such as heart disease, artery blockages, stroke, bacterial pneumonia and pre-term delivery for pregnant women. Recent studies show that periodontal disease in diabetics can make it more difficult for them to control their blood sugar.
Why do periodontal patients need to come every 3-4 months?
The interval is determined by the doctor’s clinical evaluation. Periodontal disease is controllable, not curable. More frequent maintenance visits for the removal of the bacterial plaque and calculus are needed to prevent periodontal disease from recurring.
Why does my insurance only pay for two cleanings a year if I need more?
The industry standard for preventive care is two dental cleanings a year. The frequency of dental cleanings is determined by your individual health needs and is a vital investment in maintaining your overall health.
What is a gross debridement?
It is removal of excessive plaque and calculus buildups that prevent the doctor from being able to perform a comprehensive oral examination. It is followed by one or two cleaning appointments, or if there is evidence of periodontal disease, further periodontal procedures.
What are quadrant scalings?
This is an intensive therapeutic procedure that involves using an instrument to remove plaque and calculus from the crown and root surfaces. It also involves root planing , which is the procedure designed for the removal of cementum and dentin that is rough and/or permeated by calculus or contaminated with toxins or microorganisms. It is indicated for patients with periodontal disease.
