Frequently Asked Questions Preventive Care

How often should I have my teeth professionally cleaned?
A professional cleaning is recommended every six months for patients with
healthy teeth and gums. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar, which traps plaque bacteria along the gumline. If a patient has periodontal disease, either active or arrested, more frequent cleanings or a different procedure may be necessary.

How often should I brush my teeth?
Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day using a toothpaste containing fluoride. Proper brushing removes plaque from the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of the teeth before it can harden into calculus. Just before bedtime is the most important time to brush.

Does a hard-bristled toothbrush work better than a hard-bristled one?
We recommend a soft-bristled brush with a size and shape that fits your mouth.

Should I brush my tongue?
You should brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

What causes bad breath?
There are many causes, including what you eat, periodontal ?gum? disease, tobacco products, a medical disorder, or particles of food remaining in the mouth and collecting bacteria. Your dentist can help identify the cause.

I brush & use mouthwash. Is flossing really necessary?
Cleaning thoroughly between your teeth daily with floss or another type of interdental cleaner is the only way to remove plaque that collects in the spaces between your teeth where your toothbrush can?t reach.

How do I floss braces? a retainer? a bridge?
Your hygienist can instruct you on flossing using a floss threader.

What is the best brand of home care products?
Always look for those that display the American Dental Association?s Seal of Acceptance ? your assurance that they have met ADA standards of safety and effectiveness.

My teeth are sensitive to hot and cold. What causes this, and what should I do?
Cavities, a fractured tooth, worn tooth enamel or an exposed tooth root may be the cause. A desensitizing toothpaste may help, but you should have your dentist evaluate your symptoms and recommend the proper treatment.

What causes my teeth to stain?
Tobacco use is one of the worst offenders. Coffee, tea, colas, grape juice, red wine, blueberries and soy sauce are some of the food products that can stain teeth. Aging contributes to the yellowing of teeth. Some stains occur on the inside of the tooth. For example, children who have taken tetracycline often have such stains.

Does smoking affect my teeth?
Smokers are more likely to have larger deposits of calculus (tartar) on their teeth. They are more likely to develop periodontal disease, a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Smoking causes bad breath, and it stains teeth, tooth restorations and the tongue. Smokers have a much greater risk of developing oral cancer than non-smokers.

Does chewing tobacco affect my oral health?
In addition to causing bad breath and stained teeth, chewing tobacco users often develop leathery white patches and red sores that can turn into cancer. User?s gums often pull away from their teeth where the tobacco is held in the mouth and do not grow back. This can contribute to decay and tooth loss.

Will I see the same hygienist at each visit?
Your can request an appointment with the same hygienist.

Do I have to wait six months for my next cleaning appointment?
Studies recommend a professional cleaning at least every six months for patients with good oral health. More frequent cleanings are recommended for patients who build up tartar quickly or who have undergone periodontal treatment. We are happy to accommodate any patients who may require more frequent cleanings.

Do adults benefit from fluoride varnish?
In certain situations, most definitely. Everyone should use fluoride toothpaste and/or mouthwash containing fluoride every day, but some adults are at higher risk of decay and may need more intensive supplementation. You should talk to your doctor to determine your risk of dental decay.

Why do I need to update my medical history each time I come in?
This will help ensure that you get the most complete and appropriate care. The doctor needs to know about your overall health, recent illnesses, current
medications and any chronic conditions.

Can medications I am taking affect my dental treatment?
Definitely. You should always make sure that your doctor is aware of all medications you are taking.

What is an oral cancer screening?
An oral cancer screening is a routine part of a dental examination. Your doctor will carefully examine the inside of your mouth for oral spots and sores. Early detection of oral cancer, as with other cancers, is critical for successful treatment. The American Dental Association reports that oral cancer strikes nearly 35,000 Americans each year, and that 25% of those diagnosed will die of the disease.

I just want to have my teeth cleaned. Why do I have to have an exam?
Your doctor can diagnose dental issues before they become serious problems,
including oral cancer. The exam is for your benefit, as treatment of an issue in the early stages is less invasive, less costly, and can prevent you from having a painful emergency.

Why do I need to be pre-medicated for a procedure?
The American Heart Association?s guidelines for patients who need to be pre-medicated were changed in 2007 and fewer patients now require medication before treatment. The American Heart Association still recommends that patients with certain serious heart conditions take preventive antibiotics prior to a dental procedure. You should consult with your physician or cardiologist about your current pre-medication status.

I grind/clench my teeth, which makes my mouth sore the next day. What can I do to prevent this?
Bruxism is the term for grinding your teeth or clenching your jaws. Your dentist can fabricate a nightguard to protect your teeth while you sleep.

Will my insurance pay for my dental cleaning appointment?
Most insurance companies cover two dental cleanings a year, or one in a six months period.
