What is conscious sedation?
Medications are used to help you relax during dental visits, and are used in conjunction with local anesthetics to control pain. Typically pills are taken the night before treatment and the morning of treatment. Patients are medically screened beforehand, and carefully monitored throughout the procedure. Patients under conscious sedation are able to respond to verbal and tactile commands.
Conscious sedation is not appropriate for patients under the age of 18 and for adults with some medical conditions. There is a separate charge for the sedation procedure. Dr. David A. Williams at our Smithsburg Office has been formally trained in the administration of conscious sedation.
Can I drive after a conscious sedation procedure?
No, you will have to have someone accompany you to the visit, and you should not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following your appointment.
Can I be put to sleep for a procedure in your office?
No, our office is not equipped for general anesthesia. You would be referred to an Oral Surgeon for this procedure.
