Frequently Asked Questions - Wisdom Teeth

At what age do wisdom teeth come in?
Wisdom teeth generally erupt between 17 and 21 years of age.

Why do wisdom teeth cause problems?
They are not often properly positioned and can become impacted – unable to erupt or move into their proper position. They may grow sideways and damage adjacent teeth. If they emerge only part way from the gums, an opening is created for bacteria to enter and cause an infection, resulting in pain, swelling and stiffness in the jaw. Wisdom teeth can also remain trapped beneath the gum and bone.

Do I need to have my wisdom teeth removed?
Your doctor will evaluate your wisdom teeth and make a recommendation.

Can I have my wisdom teeth removed in your office?
Your doctor may extract non-impacted wisdom teeth. Patients with impacted wisdom teeth are referred to an Oral Surgeon who specializes in the surgical removal of these teeth.
