Frequently Asked Questions - Xrays

How often should x-rays be taken?
This depends on the patient’s individual health needs. It varies according to age, risk for disease and signs and symptoms. Children may need x-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are still developing and are more likely to be affected by tooth decay.

What are bitewing x-rays?
Bitewings show the crowns (tops) of several upper and lower teeth on one film. They are especially useful for showing cavities between the teeth and changes in bone caused by gum disease.

What does a Panorex show?
A Panorex is a panoramic radiograph that shows all the upper and lower teeth, large portions of the jaws and other structures on one relatively large film. It is most often used to find unerupted or impacted teeth, cysts, retained root fragments, fractures and other conditions of the jaw.

What is a “full series?”
This is a series of bitewing and periapical films that show all of the teeth, roots and related areas of the jaws.

What if I choose not to have x-rays done?
X-rays are a diagnostic tool and are necessary for the doctor to diagnose and properly treat a patient. If x-rays are refused we ask the patient to seek dental care elsewhere.

I’m pregnant. Is it OK to have x-rays taken?
Since dental x-rays are limited to the head and neck region, it is unlikely that the developing baby receives any detectable radiation. We nevertheless usually take x-rays during pregnancy if absolutely needed (pain, infection).
