In the past two decades, dental implants have become a increasingly popular as a conservative means for replacing missing teeth or retaining loosely fitting dentures.

Dental implants are surgical grade titanium fixtures that are inserted into the jaw, and serve to function like a tooth root would. The placement of an implant can be thought of as the opposite of a dental extraction: instead of removing a tooth root, an implant is placed. The implant itself is not visible, and can either be crowned to replace a missing tooth, or fitted with other attachments to improve the retention of a complete denture.
