Dr. Alfred E. Smith, Sr.

SmithDr. Smith is a native of New Jersey. He is a graduate of Florida State University with a BS degree in Biology. He received his DDS degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. After serving two years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, he founded Allegany Dental Care in Hagerstown, MD in 1973. A father of seven, he and his wife Vivienne and their family call Hagerstown their hometown.

Their son, Jeffrey Smith and their son-in-law Cody Olson, are currently on active duty in the United States Navy.

Dr. Smith is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association (former vice-president), and the Washington County Dental Society (former president).

He coached youth soccer for the many years, and was formerly involved with the Big Brothers of Washington County and the Hagerstown Jaycees. He is an active member and current President of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Hagerstown, and serves on the Dental Advisory Board of Hagerstown Community College. He is also a member of Fountainhead Country Club.

Dr. Edward R. Beachley

BeachleyDr. Beachley is a native of Hagerstown, MD. He is a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia with a BS degree in Chemistry. He received his DDS degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland, in 1982. He, his wife Elizabeth and their three children reside in Hagerstown.

He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and the Washington County Dental Society (former treasurer).

Dr. Beachley is a member of the Hagerstown Elks #378 and Fountain Head Country Club. He has served as a past board member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Washington Co. and was a member and officer of the Hagerstown Jaycees. Dr. Beachley has also coached many of the local youth teams that are sponsored by Allegany Dental Care.

The Beachley family attends and is active in the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, where Dr. Beachley has served on the Board and is a deacon and Elizabeth teaches Sunday School. Dr. Beachley serves on the local YMCA board of directors.

Dr. David C. Grimm

Dr. Grimm is a native of Scotdale, Pennsylvania. He received a BS in Math from the University of Pittsburgh, and his DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in 1985. Dr. Grimm joined Allegany Dental Care in 1985, and has helped patients here faithfully for over 27 years. He, his wife Gwen, and their two children reside in Hagerstown.

He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and is a former treasurer of the Washington County Dental Society.

Dr. Thomas P. McCafferty

McCaffertyDr. McCafferty, a native of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, received his Bachelor of Science degree from The College of New Jersey, graduating magna cum laude. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, magna cum laude, from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. He joined Allegany Dental Care in 2000.

Dr. McCafferty has traveled to Cork, Ireland as part of an international dental exchange program, and spent a month with the Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Arizona providing dental care for patients on the Navajo reservation. He has volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout himself.

Dr. McCafferty is a graduate of Class XVI of the Leadership Hagerstown program, which has kept him in touch with developments in Hagerstown and Washington County. Dr. McCafferty has also recently been active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Washington County Program, and additionally has lectured on items of dental interest at Hagerstown Community College.

Dr. McCafferty is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and has served two terms as President of the Washington County Dental Society and is currently serving as the Treasurer.

Dr. McCafferty, his wife Sarma, and their daughters Gabrielle and Leah live in Hagerstown.

Dr. Benjamin J. Boniface

BonifaceDr. Benjamin J. Boniface is a native of Middletown, Maryland. He received a B.A. degree in Biology and Chemistry from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, and his D.D.S. degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland. He and his wife Jill and their two children reside in Middletown.

He is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and the Washington County Dental Society. He coaches youth soccer, lacrosse, and basketball.

Dr. Matthew H. Carella, DDS

Dr. Matthew Carella, originally from Long Island, New York received his bachelor’s degree, Cum Laude, in Chemistry from The University of Delaware. Dr. Carella then earned his Doctorate in Dental Surgery degree, Magna Cum Laude, from The University of Maryland Dental School. During his time at the university, he participated in various community service events and held several leadership positions including class vice president. While attending dental school, Dr. Carella completed a one year advanced training program in the Special Patient and Geriatric Care Clinic which concentrated in delivering dental care to a diverse population of special needs and geriatric patients. Upon graduation, Dr. Carella was accepted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society and received several honors including The Academy of General Dentistry Award.

Dr. Carella continued his training by completing a one year postdoctoral General Practice Residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his residency, Dr. Carella studied under world-renowned faculty and specialists in the fields of Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Pediatrics and Endodontics. The program focused on all aspects of dental care with special concentration in restorative, aesthetic, surgical and implant dentistry. Dr. Carella is committed to providing the highest quality dental care while remaining focused upon patient comfort.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Carella enjoys cycling, beach volleyball and surfing.

Dr. James A. Kiefer, DDS

Dr. James Kiefer is originally from Cockeysville, Maryland. In college at Virginia Tech he majored in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise receiving his Bachelor’s of Science, Magna Cum Laude. While at Virginia Tech, he also worked as a student athletic trainer for the Division I Men’s Football team and Women’s Lacrosse team.

Dr. Kiefer went on to earn his Doctorate in Dental Surgery at University of Maryland Dental School. During his time at University of Maryland he participated in numerous community service activities including Mission of Mercy and volunteer coaching for Charm City Youth Lacrosse League. Dr. Kiefer also held numerous leadership roles including Vice President of his class. In his final year at University of Maryland, Dr. Kiefer completed a one year advanced training program in Oral Surgery. Upon graduation, Dr. Kiefer was honored with the International College of Dentists award for student leadership.

Dr. Kiefer is an active member of the American Dental Association, Maryland State Dental Association, Washington County Dental Society, The Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Association of Dental Sleep Medicine. He strives to provide the highest quality of care while working hard to deliver it in a friendly and comfortable environment.

While not practicing dentistry, Dr. Kiefer enjoys several athletic activities including skiing, beach volleyball and weightlifting. He is also a competitive triathlete who enjoys training on the trails and roads of Washington, Allegany and Frederick Counties.
